Works-For-Me-Wednesday--BACKWARDS

Well, I am going to give this a shot.. Shannon at Rocks In My Dryer is hosting WFMW-Backwards today and my question of the day is...

What authors or titles of books would be age appropriate for my 7/0 girl who is reading at a 5th grade level and is burning through books really fast? (She takes after her mother : ) I am especially looking for Christian books for her.

We know about Little House, Boxcar, and Magic Treehouse.
Well... FYI, I do know how to spell despite what the link says... sometimes... today wasn't the day. : ) Can you say "recommendation"?

Have you tried the Mandy series? They're older, but a good Christian series. You may be able to find them in your library. My daughter is like yours and also likes The Littles, Heidi, simpler version of Anne of Green Gables, and the Babysitter's Club.

You can also search your local library's database online (usually!) for books similiar to the ones your daughter reads, and restrict the search to Juvenile Fiction to only see books that are age appropriate for her.

Has she read the Anne of Green Gables series? There are other LM Montgomery books, too, that I loved as a girl. Anything by E.B. White is good, too; I especially liked Trumpet of the Swan.

Little House, Betsy-Tacy, Landon Snow, Adventures in Odyssey, anything by Bill Myers, Cul de Sac kids, Mandie, FaithGirlz...I've found that a lot of the Christian authors I like have written kids books. So, maybe you could start there. Also, as she gets a little older (pre-teen) she HAS to read The Christy Miller series by Robin Jones Gunn.

Try books by Scott O'Dell. They are Historic fiction about Spanish / Native California, I loved them when I was that age / level.

The Grandma's Attic series by Arleta Richardson, and I third the Mandie books.

Baby Island was a childhood favorite (not Christian, but nothing objectionable and age appropriate).

The Childhood of Famous Americans series.

Young Pilgrim's Progress

Sonlight curriculum has their booklists on their website. If you don't already use their curriculum it is a great resource for age/level appropriate classics and Christian books.

Thanks for all the help! I have heard of some of your suggestions but not all of them. I am looking forward to finding some of these at the library and for Cmas.

I thought of your post again today and wanted to pass on one more recommendation! I just found these in my library (there are benefits to being a librarian, let me tell you!!). The Lily Series by Nancy Rue is awesome! I borrowed the first one for my 8 year old and she devoured it! I'm reading it, too, and it's very well written, AND it's God-centred without being in your face, or fluffy. The first one is about discovering your God-confidence and not being so focused on your looks. It looks like there are 14 books in the series so far. The author also wrote The Beauty Book and The Body Book, both of which I have and intend on giving to my daughter in another year when all those "questions" pop up! The Lily Series is published by Zonderkidz. They are definitely available on amazon if you can't find them at your Christian bookstore.

Happy hunting - if I find anymore, I will be sure to let you know!
